The Conservation Fund is looking to fill two paid summer internship positions at our Chapel Hill, NC office and two paid year-long fellowship positions working on our forestlands in Mendocino County, CA. People of color, women, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Communications Intern (Chapel Hill, NC) will learn about green business lending, while working with our Natural Capital Investment Fund (NCIF) team to expand involvement with existing and potential partners and engage our digital audience. Projects may include creating marketing materials, writing for e-newsletters, blogs, and other social media, participating in networking events in-person, and general admin support.
The Forestry Intern (Chapel Hill, NC) will provide technical support to the New Forest Fund, which owns and manages 110,000 acres of forestland throughout the U.S. Projects may include maintaining/improving forestry geodatabases, GIS analysis and financial forecasting for potential acquisitions, and market metrics for contractor administration and forest certification.
The Field Forestry Fellows (Mendocino County, CA) will gain apprenticeship experience in conservation forestland management, while providing field support for sustainable timber harvest and conservation on 54,000 acres of coastal redwood forest. Projects will include forest inventory, timber sale layout, road & sediment-source assessments, biological surveys, public access, and related office/admin support.

Manager, Log Acquisition and Marketing (Roseburg, OR). Roseburg Forest Products Co is a progressive family owned company that is considered a leader in the Pacific NW wood products industry. We own and manage approximately 635,000 acres in Oregon and Northern California. We are currently seeking a Log Acquisition and Marketing Manager in scenic Southern Oregon.
The General Responsibilities are: Log and timber acquisition (procurement) for Roseburg’s OR and CA manufacturing facilities; Log marketing and outside sales for all internal logs produced from Roseburg’s lands and contracts in OR and CA; Wood fiber and hog fuel procurement for Roseburg’s Dillard Particleboard Facility and Roseburg’s Biomass Energy Plant.
The Specific Duties are: Planning and Forecasting – assist in the preparation of log sourcing plans, price projections and monthly / quarterly forecasts. Maintain regional timber availability plan. Establish performance goals for log buyers and timber cruisers; conduct performance reviews twice per year; Timber and Log Acquisition – direct log buyers to acquire required open market log volumes as determined quarterly and annually. Direct timber cruising and appraisal of timber sales (private and public) as necessary to meeting acquisition requirements; Marketing – work closely with the logging manager to plan and manage log marketing capabilities in a way that maximizes the return-to-log (RTL) through outside sales relationships. Utilize fee stumpage sales when appropriate as a marketing tool to capitalize on market opportunities; maintain positive working relationships with all primary log suppliers, log brokers and log customers. Develop and maintain close working relationships with all relevant Roseburg plant managers, key manufacturing personnel, controllers, Resource Managers and other administrative personnel; Monitor all log purchases, log sales, timber cruise cut-outs and log quality to ensure performance targets and customer expectations are met; Work closely with the VP of Resources to gather, plan, integrate, analyze and disseminate relevant log market data and information; Prepare and present internal log transfer price updates & forecasts, purchase log and timber sale analysis and contract timber inventory reports; In conjunction with the Resource Managers, help prepare and maintain a long-term strategic wood supply model that addresses both internal consumption requirements and external sales opportunities; Represent the company on industry trade association boards and committees; and participate on the Safety Committee.
Minimum Qualifications are: BS in Forest Engineering, Forest Management or related field. MBA or business degree would be desirable; Minimum 10 years experience/familiarity with log buying, timber cruising, log scaling, fiber supply, logging, road construction and operational forestry; Proficiency with Excel and Word; Excellent communication skills; Strong analytical and problem solving ability and a solid understanding of the forest products industry and manufacturing processes.

Forester: Jeff Webster, RPF a forestry consultant in Redding, California is looking for a forester to assist with layout and writing of Timber Harvest Plans (THP), small landowner management plans, plantation and vegetation management, timber marking, inventory, GPS/GIS, research and logging administration. Desire someone with interest in all aspects of forestry.
Minimum qualifications are a degree in forestry with experience in THP layout and writing. California Registered Professional Forester is preferred but not required, however candidate must have THP preparation experience and knowledge of the California Forest Practice Rules. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and ESRI ArcView software is essential. Must be able to work safely in rough, steep terrain and have experience with forestry equipment including GPS, chainsaws & ATV’s. Should be highly motivated and organized. A valid driver’s license is required. References required. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Minimum qualifications include a four year degree in forestry or related field coupled with two or more years of field experience performing these duties.
A high degree of self-motivation, excellent organizational skills and ability to work safely and effectively in steep, rugged terrain are prerequisites of this position. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license. This position will be based in Siskiyou County with work sites located throughout California and Oregon. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Forestry Technicians: Primary duties will include sale layout, timber marking and timber cruising. Ideal applicants will have work experience performing these primary duties in a production-oriented setting. A high degree of self-motivation and ability to work safely and effectively in steep, rugged terrain are prerequisites of this position. Travel will be required.
