Course Descriptions
Surveyor Initial Course Description:
This course is designed for practitioners working under the California Forest Practice Rules (Forest Practice) or California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) who require certification from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention (CAL FIRE) to conduct cultural resources inventory studies. Typically, this includes Registered Professional Foresters and those working under their direction, environmental scientists, representatives of Native American organizations, and natural resource professionals with a basic understanding of field surveying and mapping. The course is an intensive 40-hour, week-long training that includes lecture, lab, and field components. The content includes identification, recordation, and reporting for cultural resources compliance related to timber harvesting and vegetation management projects in an environmental compliance context as required by the California Office of Historic Preservation. Students should be prepared to complete prerequisites and testing to pass the course. The certification only applies for use on CAL FIRE projects where CAL FIRE is the lead agency under CEQA or Forest Practice Review. All use of the certification is done under the review of a CAL FIRE Archaeologist. Enrollment in the course is not intended for professionals who do not need certification, or professional cultural resources practitioners. The course is delivered through a joint effort between California Licensed Forester Association (CLFA) and CAL FIRE.
Each full week course includes two scholarship seats for members of Native American organizations and their representatives. Please contact CLFA for more information and enrollment or placement on a wait list. Be aware that there is a high demand for this course, and you may be placed on a waitlist for future classes that do not yet have confirmed dates.
Archaeological Surveyor Refresher Course:
The refresher course is an 8-hour course designed to inform archaeological surveyor certificate holders on new laws and regulations concerning cultural resources, contemporary themes, and best practices in cultural resources management, and to broaden the depth of knowledge of California’s cultural past. It is required to take one refresher course every five years to maintain your Archaeological Surveyor certification earned by attending the initial class. Refresher topics are typically chosen by CAL FIRE cultural resources staff based on input from certificate holders, CLFA, and CAL FIRE management.
The refresher course is meant to provide continued instruction in cultural resources management and archaeological survey. These courses are not meant to address specific problems on individual projects. Questions and issues that are of concern regarding specific projects should be addressed through the appropriate avenues which may include CAL FIRE archaeologists, CAL FIRE Unit or Region staff, Review Teams, and/or CAL FIRE cultural resources at HQ.
